For most visitors the answer is a one-night cruise. Ha Long Bay is 165 km from Hanoi, the Ha Long Bay Management Board gives about 1 hour 30 by expressway each way, and its own timetable for the shortest sightseeing route runs five hours, so a day trip is mostly road. A day trip is right only if you have a single free day; a second night is a pleasure, not a necessity. And "Ha Long Bay" on a booking page does not always mean the bay you think: Ha Long, Bai Tu Long and Lan Ha have different managers.
We checked the figures below on 31 October 2026, mostly on the Board's own website. We are a Sapa trekking company: we do not sell cruises and earn nothing from the boat you choose, so this is a decision guide, not a sales page. Where we could not confirm a number, we say so. For the wider route, see our northern Vietnam 5-day itinerary and northern Vietnam travel guide.
Cruise or Day Trip: Which Should You Pick?
Choose by the days you can spare, not by the price. One free day means a day trip, two days means a one-night cruise, and three days means a two-night cruise only if you want to slow down. The ladder below is our judgement, built on the official numbers in the next section.
Day trip
About 3 hours of driving at the Board's figure, plus the sailing. You see the bay but never wake up on it.
One-night cruise
The shortest version with an evening and a morning on the water. Our default for a first visit.
Two-night cruise
Slower, and the Board's fee is higher. Worth it if you want fewer stops a day, not more of the same.
Three reasons sit behind that default. First, the road: 165 km each way means about three hours of driving in the same day, and the Board's own Route 1 timetable already fills 07:00 to 12:00. Second, light: a day trip from Hanoi cannot be on the water at dawn, because the drive alone takes 1 hour 30. Third, a trade-off: a storm closure costs a day-tripper one day and a cruiser two, so a cruise needs a spare day around it.
A day trip is better when you have one day, when you or a child do not want to sleep on a boat, or when the budget is tight. Our day trips from Hanoi guide ranks Ninh Binh ahead of Ha Long for a single day, and the Ninh Binh guide says why.
What Each Option Gives You, in Official Numbers
The Board publishes a fee for each route and a time limit for overnight stays, and those two lists show the real difference between the options. The table puts them side by side for Ha Long Bay only; Lan Ha Bay is run by a different authority, covered below.
| What you compare | Day trip | 1 night (2 days) | 2 nights (3 days) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Board sightseeing fee | 250,000 VND on Routes 1, 2 and 5; 200,000 on Routes 3 and 4 | 550,000 VND on Route 2; 500,000 on Routes 3 and 4 | 750,000 VND on Route 2; 650,000 on Routes 3 and 4 |
| Time allowed on the bay | Boats leave from 05:00 and are back by 20:00 in summer (19:00 in winter) | At most 24 hours from departure | At most 48 hours from departure |
| Hanoi driving (1 h 30 each way) | About 3 hours, same day | About 3 hours, split over 2 days | About 3 hours, split over 3 days |
| Dawn or dusk on the water | Dusk at best | Both | Both, twice |
| Our view | Only if you have one day | The best default | For slowing down |
Two cautions. The Board's page does not say whether the fee differs for foreign and Vietnamese visitors, and we could not confirm whether an operator's price includes it, so ask. And the fee is only the Board's part: boat, meals, cabin and transfer are the operator's price, for which we found no official figure and give none.
Ha Long, Bai Tu Long, Lan Ha and Cat Ba: Who Is Where
Ha Long Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay are in Quang Ninh province; Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba Island are in Hai Phong city, to the south. That means two sets of rules and, since 2023, one shared heritage listing. The table shows who manages what.
| Name | Province and manager | In the UNESCO property? | What we could confirm for a cruise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ha Long Bay | Quang Ninh; Ha Long Bay Management Board | Yes, the original core (inscribed 1994) | Eight official sightseeing routes, VHL1 to VHL8. Overnight stays on Routes 2, 3 and 4. |
| Bai Tu Long Bay | Quang Ninh; Bai Tu Long National Park, office in Van Don | Not in the property's name; we found no text placing it inside the boundary | The park site features four tour routes. Dan Tri reported the first overnight anchorage for tourist boats on 10 May 2026. |
| Lan Ha Bay | Hai Phong city | Yes, as part of the Cat Ba Archipelago added in 2023 | Four shared Ha Long to Lan Ha routes started in April 2026. |
| Cat Ba Island | Hai Phong city; Cat Ba National Park covers much of it | Yes: IUCN says the extension largely comprises Cat Ba National Park | The island is the usual base for Lan Ha day boats; it is reached through Hai Phong. |
The Board describes Ha Long Bay as 1,553 square km with 1,969 islands, 980 of them named. UNESCO lists a property of 65,650 hectares, about 656 square km by our conversion, with 1,133 islands and islets across Ha Long Bay and the Cat Ba Archipelago together. So "nearly 2,000 islands" is the Board's wider bay, not the heritage boundary. Both are official; they measure different areas.
The practical point: the bay you book decides your rules. The Board sets routes and fees only for its own waters. IUCN, which advises UNESCO on natural sites, counts over 1,000 tour boats operating within the property as a whole. We found no count for each bay, so we cannot say which is quieter. Some of our other guides call Lan Ha and Bai Tu Long less crowded; treat that as a local impression, not a measured fact.
What the UNESCO Listing Covers
The property is now called Ha Long Bay - Cat Ba Archipelago. It was first inscribed in 1994, its boundaries were modified in 2000 and again in 2023, and it is listed under natural criteria (vii) and (viii). That is the whole formal story; the rest is how it reads on a boat.
The listing gives a core area of 65,650 hectares, 1,133 islands and islets, and a buffer zone of 34,140 hectares. It spans Quang Ninh province and Hai Phong city, which is why the Board and Hai Phong now coordinate. The 2023 change, taken at the World Heritage Committee's 45th session (Decision 45 COM 8B.3), added the Cat Ba Archipelago. Criterion (vii) is about natural beauty; the Committee's text for the extension describes fengcong and fenglin karst, two kinds of limestone hill. Criterion (viii) concerns earth history.
Two honest limits. UNESCO's website refused our automated requests (HTTP 403) on 31 October 2026, so these figures come from the listing text as a search engine returned it, not from our own reading of the page; check the listing before you quote a number. And UNESCO status names a landscape, not a boat. A 2024 Committee decision (46 COM 7B.67), as summarised to us, asks for a more integrated management approach to the Cat Ba area.
Getting From Hanoi to Ha Long Bay
Ha Long Bay is 165 km from Hanoi. The Board's own page gives about 1 hour 30 by the Hanoi to Hai Phong expressway and about 3 hours 30 by National Highway 18 through Bac Ninh and Hai Phong, which is the old road. That gap is the reason cruises are now a two-day trip rather than a three-day one.
Other times on the Board's page, all to the bay: Noi Bai Airport about 2 hours via the Hai Phong to Ha Long expressway, Van Don Airport about 45 minutes, and Cat Bi Airport in Hai Phong about 45 minutes. We did not check which airlines serve Van Don. The Board names two departure points for sightseeing boats, the Tuan Chau International Marina and the Ha Long International Cruise Port, so ask which one your boat uses.
For buses and shuttles we found no official timetable. Cruise operators usually run their own shuttle from Hanoi hotels, and we could not confirm times, so ask for the pick-up time and drop-off point in writing. Our things to do in Hanoi and 2 days in Hanoi guides help you pick a base for an early pick-up.
Trains are the one thing we could not settle. We found no confirmed regular passenger service to Ha Long. Press reports said a Hanoi to Quang Ninh high-speed railway was due to start building on 12 April 2026, so it is not running; we found no date we could trust for opening. Plan on the road.
Reaching Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba Island
Lan Ha Bay is reached through Cat Ba Island, by road and ferry through Hai Phong, or as a sea route from Ha Long Bay. The last stage is always a boat.
The sea route is official. The Board's Route 5, VHL5, starts like Route 1 at the Ha Long port, calls at Thien Cung grotto and Dau Go cave, and ends at Gia Luan wharf on Cat Ba Island. Its fee is 250,000 VND. Since April 2026 four shared routes link the two bays, and VietnamPlus reported more than 4,500 visitors on them from April to June 2026, with new rules for coordinating tourist vessels in force in Hai Phong from April.
Overland, private operators sell a bus plus ferry ticket from Hanoi through Hai Phong, and one operator guide gives 3.5 to 4.5 hours in all. We found no official timetable or ferry fare, and no Hai Phong sightseeing fee for Lan Ha comparable to the Board's list. Ask what is included and whether any fee is paid on board.
Fees, Hours and Rules You Can Check
Every figure here is on the Ha Long Bay Management Board's website. Fees are per person per trip, in dong. We checked the Board's pages on 31 October 2026, and the fee page carries its own update stamp of 31 March 2025, so confirm at the ticket counter.
Hours matter more than they look. Thien Cung, Dau Go, Ba Hang, Sung Sot and Ti Top are open 07:30 to 17:30 in summer, which the Board dates 16 April to 31 October, and 07:30 to 17:00 in winter, 1 November to 15 April, so the season changes the day after our check. Boats leave from 05:00 and must be back by 20:00 in summer; in winter they leave from 05:30 and return by 19:00. The Board's page gives two slightly different season dates, so ask your operator.
The Board's visitor notes are short. Buy tickets only for the official routes. Do not hire a boat from someone who approaches you near the passenger port, and ignore touts on the roads near Ha Long city and Tuan Chau. Bring no single-use plastic, throw no waste into the bay, buy no coral, and buy nothing from the small boats that come alongside. The Board lists eight overnight boats but says nothing about licensing on that page, so we cannot tell you what licence a cruise boat must hold, only that permits exist and can be suspended, as the next section shows.
Best Season and Storm Risk
The Board describes a winter from November to March at an average 15 to 20 degrees Celsius, a summer from May to September at 26 to 27 degrees, and spring and autumn transitions in April and October, with 2,000 to 2,200 mm of rain a year. We could not open a national weather service page with storm statistics, so we give no storm count.
Seasons are the Ha Long Bay Management Board's. The Board does not rate months as good or bad; any such rating on this page is our judgement.
What we can show is what the authorities did in 2025. On 13 June the Board published a notice that permits for vessels to operate and stay overnight were suspended, and every Ha Long Bay tourist boat had to bring passengers to the mainland before 18:00 that day. On 20 July a directive banned port departures for tourist boats. Dan Tri's report of 21 July also said the vessel Vinh Xanh had sunk on 19 July, with 36 bodies recovered and 3 people missing. On 24 September Quang Ninh suspended vessel permits for the approach of a typhoon, until the final storm bulletin, according to Viet Nam News. Those three dates fall in June, July and September.
Our judgement, not a sourced rule: April and October sit between the cool and hot seasons, and the summer months carry the most cancellation risk. October also matches the golden terraces in our Sapa rice harvest guide. For month-by-month numbers, see Vietnam weather by month, the June to August guide and the rainy season guide. Whatever the month, ask in writing what happens if the Board suspends permits: refund, re-booking or a shorter trip.
A One-Night Cruise, Step by Step
A one-night cruise is two half-days on the road around one night on the water. The four cards below combine the Board's rules with our own arithmetic; the exact timetable is each operator's.
Hanoi to the port
About 1 hour 30 on the expressway per the Board, more with hotel pick-ups and a rest stop. Boats leave from the Ha Long International Cruise Port or the Tuan Chau marina.
First afternoon
Sailing, then cave, beach or kayak stops. Sites open 07:30 to 17:30 in summer and to 17:00 in winter, so stops fit inside those hours.
The night
The boat anchors in the zone for its route. For Route 2 the Board names Trong cave, Trinh Nu cave, Ho Dong Tien, Lat 690 islet and Ti Top 587 island.
Morning and return
A one-night stay may last at most 24 hours from departure. A boat that left port at 12:00 is therefore back by 12:00, then you drive home.
That last card is the quiet constraint. If the boat leaves at midday, your second morning is short, because the schedule follows the 24-hour limit, not the sunrise. Ask for the departure and check-out times and count the hours yourself.
How to Pick a Boat Without Trusting Stars
Judge a cruise by facts you can ask for in writing, not by star ratings. We have no data on how many reviews are fake and will not guess; this is plain reasoning, not a licence check.
- Get the boat's registered name before you pay, plus the route (VHL1 to VHL8 or a Lan Ha route), the departure port and the overnight zone. A listing that gives only "luxury cruise" is not a boat.
- Ask which bay. Use the table above: Ha Long core, Bai Tu Long and Lan Ha have different managers and fees.
- Check the Board's overnight boat list, which showed eight boats on 31 October 2026. We cannot say it is complete, so a missing name is a question, not proof of a problem.
- Read the low reviews first, and the dated ones. Look for the same boat named, the same cabin described and recent months. Reviews that praise "the cruise" without naming a boat tell you nothing.
- Be wary of a price far below the rest. Reasoning, not a statistic: it usually means a smaller cabin, a larger group or extras charged on board, so ask for the list of what is included.
- Ask about safety and storms: life jackets in your size, what the crew does if the Board suspends permits, and the refund or re-booking rule.
Fitting Ha Long Into a Trip With Sapa
Allow about seven days for Hanoi, a one-night cruise and a Sapa trek with a homestay. That is our arithmetic, not a sourced figure: 2 days for the cruise, a day to reach Sapa (our Hanoi to Sapa timetable lists 5.5 to 6 hours by day bus), 2 days trekking and a spare Hanoi day.
Put the cruise first. It is the part a storm can cancel, and an early slot leaves room to re-book; a cruise on the last day before a flight home has no slack. With fewer than seven days, our 5-day north itinerary argues that Ninh Binh beats Ha Long. With more, the 1-week and 10-day Vietnam itineraries show where the bay sits in a longer route, and how many days you need in Vietnam covers the whole country.
The two places want different months, so check both. Our best time to visit Sapa guide covers the mountains, and what Sapa trekking costs and the 2, 3 or 4-day Sapa itinerary help you size that half.

Sources and What We Could Not Confirm
All checked on 31 October 2026. The Ha Long Bay Management Board pages are in English or Vietnamese: its fee page, visiting hours, how to get there, visitor notes, natural conditions and the 13 June 2025 suspension notice. Heritage facts: the UNESCO listing and IUCN World Heritage Outlook. Press: VietnamPlus, 18 July 2026, Dan Tri, 21 July 2025 and Viet Nam News, 24 September 2025.
What we could not confirm: whether the Board's fees differ for foreign visitors or are inside tour prices; a Hai Phong fee for Lan Ha; the licence a cruise boat must hold; official bus or Cat Ba ferry timetables; a storm count from a national weather service; the railway's opening date; and the UNESCO page itself, which blocked our requests. Prices and rules change, so check the Board before you pay.
Frequently Asked Questions
For most visitors, yes, if you can spare a night. The road is 165 km, about 1 hour 30 each way on the expressway by the Ha Long Bay Management Board's figure, so a day trip spends about three hours driving and cannot be on the water at dawn. A one-night cruise adds an evening and a morning. A day trip is right if you have only one day. This is our judgement from official numbers, checked on 31 October 2026.
The Board gives 165 km. It lists about 1 hour 30 by the Hanoi to Hai Phong expressway and about 3 hours 30 by National Highway 18. Hotel pick-ups and rest stops add time that no official page gives, so ask your operator for the pick-up time.
The Board's fee page lists, per person per trip, 250,000 VND for day Routes 1, 2 and 5 and 200,000 VND for Routes 3 and 4. An overnight stay on Route 2 is 550,000 VND for one night and 750,000 VND for two. The page is stamped 31 March 2025; we read it on 31 October 2026.
Lan Ha Bay is in Hai Phong, south of Ha Long Bay, and belongs to the Cat Ba Archipelago, which UNESCO added to the property in 2023; it is now called Ha Long Bay - Cat Ba Archipelago. Bai Tu Long Bay is not in the property's name and we found no text placing it inside.
The Board describes winter from November to March at 15 to 20 degrees Celsius and summer from May to September at 26 to 27 degrees. In 2025 permits were suspended for storms on 13 June, 20 July and 24 September. April and October are our pick, as a judgement, not a sourced rule.
We found no confirmed regular passenger train. Press reports said a Hanoi to Quang Ninh high-speed railway was due to start construction on 12 April 2026, so it is not running. Plan on a cruise-operator shuttle, private car or bus on the expressway.
About seven days: two for a one-night cruise, a travel day to Sapa, two days of trekking with a homestay and a spare day in Hanoi. That is our planning arithmetic, not a sourced figure. Do the cruise first, because a storm can cancel it and you need slack to re-book.
No. We sell Sapa treks and Hanoi to Sapa transfers, and we take no commission from cruise operators. We can plan the Sapa days around your cruise dates, but you book the boat with an operator you have checked yourself.
