Cat Ba is the largest island of an archipelago of more than 360 islands at the southern edge of Ha Long Bay, about 150 km south-east of Hanoi. You reach it in three to four hours by bus and ferry from Hanoi, or in under three by speedboat from Tuan Chau. Stay two nights if you can: a day trip leaves little time for the national park, the beaches and the boat out into Lan Ha Bay. The best months depend on which source you trust, and they disagree, so read the section on seasons before you book.

We are a Sapa trekking company, not a Cat Ba operator, so this guide is built from published sources that we read on 3 November 2026, with the source and date next to every price and claim. Where two sources disagree, as they do on the best months, the monkey tours and the fastest route from Hanoi, we say so. If you are choosing between the bay’s two famous faces, our Ha Long Bay cruise guide compares cruises and day trips, and our Vietnam beaches by month guide covers the Cat Co beaches.

Key Takeaways

  • Hanoi to Cat Ba: about 3 to 4.5 hours by bus plus ferry, at about US$8 to 17, or about 2.5 to 3 hours by speedboat from Tuan Chau (north-vietnam.com, October 2026; Bhaya Cruises, 2026).
  • One source gives a combined bus and ferry ticket from the Hanoi Old Quarter at 400,000 VND, leaving at 8 am and 1 pm (vietnamtourism.com, 11 October 2026).
  • Lan Ha Bay has the same limestone karsts as Ha Long Bay, and one source says about 80 per cent fewer boats. Both bays are part of the same UNESCO World Heritage listing, inscribed in 2023.
  • Two nights is a workable minimum; three is the most recommended stay (Bhaya Cruises). A one-day trip from Hanoi is rushed.
  • Months disagree: vietnamtourism.com says October to December is best and June to September is typhoon season, while Bhaya Cruises calls May to September clear and June to August peak season.

What Cat Ba Is, and How It Relates to Ha Long Bay

Cat Ba is the main island of the Cat Ba archipelago, which Wikipedia (last edited 21 October 2026) counts as 366 or 367 islands and puts at 262.41 square kilometres in total, of which 169.41 is land and 93 is sea. The island’s own population was 18,934 in 2021, according to the figure the article takes from UNESCO’s 2022 nomination papers, and the old town has about 8,000 people. The highest point is Cao Vong mountain at 322 metres, and the island receives over 350,000 visitors a year, an undated figure.

Lan Ha Bay is the water on the island’s eastern side, and Ha Long Bay is further north. Vietnamtourism.com (11 October 2026) calls Lan Ha “Cat Ba’s immediate neighbor” and says the karsts are “identical”, the same 300-million-year-old geology, with 80 per cent fewer boats, while cruise ships and package tours own the UNESCO core near Bai Chay. Bhaya Cruises, which sells cruises in Lan Ha Bay, makes the same point more gently and says both bays form part of the same inscribed landscape. Both Wikipedia and Bhaya give 2023 as the year the Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba Archipelago World Heritage listing was inscribed. The island was named a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 2004. Treat the crowd claims as a cruise seller’s view: the sources do not give counts of boats.

One nuance on the listing. Wikipedia says the Cat Ba archipelago has been part of the Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba Archipelago World Heritage Site since 2023, and that the southeastern islands make up the edge of Lan Ha Bay, but it does not say in so many words that every part of Lan Ha Bay lies inside the protected boundary. Bhaya Cruises says both bays are in the inscribed landscape. For a traveller the practical point is the same: you are looking at the same kind of scenery, and the listing is a reason to follow park and boat rules, not to expect a different bay.

Getting There From Hanoi

Take a bus and ferry for the cheapest trip and a speedboat for the fastest. The sources agree on the shape of the journey and disagree on the times, so use the ranges below as a guide and ask the operator for the actual departure. The distance is given as about 150 km by Bhaya Cruises and Wikipedia and as about 170 km on the combined route by north-vietnam.com.

Three details help. The ferry timetable is not online and the last departure from Hai Phong is at 5 pm; vietnamtourism.com says to buy a ticket at the Ben Dinh pier before 4 pm. The island’s buses leave from Cat Ba Town, in the south, and the ferry port you arrive at may be Gia Luan, on the northern tip, followed by a local bus of about 30 minutes (Bhaya Cruises). And cruises in Lan Ha Bay usually include the transfer from Hanoi, which can be cheaper than doing it yourself if you plan to take a boat anyway.

A search result also mentioned a cable car near Dong Bai Port that has taken visitors from the mainland to Cat Ba since April 2024. None of the five pages we read confirmed it, so we cannot give a time or a price; check at the pier. For getting to Hanoi in the first place, our guides to getting to Sapa and the Vietnam airports guide cover the Hanoi end, and the sleeper bus guide explains what a Vietnamese long-distance bus is like.

Leaving Cat Ba: the Bus Timetable

The return side is well documented. North-vietnam.com (October 2026) lists direct buses from Cat Ba to Hanoi and says it is “a selection of listed services, not a complete schedule”. A few of the entries show the range: the fast operators take about two hours between listed times and the seater bus takes about three and a half.

Cat Ba Town and Where to Stay

Cat Ba Town is a small harbour town and the base for most visitors. Vietnamtourism.com describes the main strip, 1/4 Street, as “a jumble of faded guesthouses, repair shops, and motorbike taxis” with no high-end resort in sight, and Bhaya Cruises says the town is compact enough to walk, with most restaurants, the main beach and the harbour close together. Wikipedia says that over 150 hotels are listed, from cheap budget hotels to upscale resorts, that a strip of five-storey budget hotels lines the seafront, and that overnight boats moor in Cai Beo bay, about 2 km from the old town. The photograph below shows the Cat Co 1 beach, with resort buildings on the hill beside it.

The sources give a budget snapshot for 2025 to 2026: a dorm bed at US$6 to 10 (150,000 to 250,000 VND) and a private air-conditioned room at US$20 to 35 (500,000 to 875,000 VND), and a motorbike at about US$6 (150,000 VND) a day (vietnamtourism.com, 11 October 2026). We have no hotel names that we can stand behind, so we recommend neither a hotel nor a hostel. Book a room with a window if you can, and ask whether it is in the old town or by the beaches, because the two are a short taxi apart.

The National Park, the Langur and the Cannon Fort

Cat Ba National Park occupies roughly half the island, according to Bhaya Cruises, and its entrance lies about 18 km from the town. Wikipedia says 9,800 hectares, about a third of the island’s land, were annexed as Cat Ba National Park in 1986, and by 2006 the park held 109 square kilometres of land and 52 of inshore water, with 92 staff including over 60 rangers. We found no entrance fee on any of the five pages we read. A search summary gave two conflicting figures, 80,000 VND and 40,000 VND, so ask at the gate.

The best-known resident is the Cat Ba langur, a primate found nowhere else. Wikipedia says the population fell from 2,400 to 2,700 animals to as few as 53 in 2000, and that about 68 remain in the wild, a figure without a date. Bhaya Cruises, quoting the Cat Ba Langur Conservation Project, says fewer than 100. Both agree it is critically endangered, and the odds of seeing one on a day walk are low. Please do not feed or chase wildlife.

Two walks come up most often. The Cannon Fort is a newly built post on a 177 metre peak, a ten-minute scooter ride from town, with 360-degree views and a modest entry fee (Wikipedia; Bhaya Cruises). Trung Trang Cave takes 30 to 40 minutes to walk through, with fees described as modest. Vietnamtourism.com adds Viet Hai village, 20 km east on a road that turns from asphalt to dirt, and a summit open from 7 am to 5 pm and free, which it calls Ngua Peak. Bhaya names a peak of about 177 m as Ngu Lam, and the pages do not say whether these are the same place.

Lan Ha Bay: Kayaks, Boats and Monkey Island

Most visitors come for the water. A private kayak at Ba Trai Dao beach costs about US$12 (300,000 VND) for half a day with hotel pick-up, and a Lan Ha express ticket to Van Gia costs US$15 (375,000 VND) return, according to vietnamtourism.com. Day cruises leave from Ben Beo Harbour each morning with kayaking, and trips can be booked in Cat Ba Town through local agencies (Bhaya Cruises; north-vietnam.com).

Monkey Island: two opposite verdicts

Vietnamtourism.com says the headline tours charge US$30 (750,000 VND) to Monkey Island and tells readers not to go, calling the monkeys aggressive. Wikipedia describes hiking and swimming on Monkey Island just offshore and a resort there. We cannot judge from here, so ask what the tour includes, check the price against the US$30 figure and keep food out of sight if you go.

The Cat Co Beaches

The three Cat Co beaches sit a short walk or taxi ride from town. Bhaya Cruises calls Cat Co 1 the busiest, with sun loungers and a small restaurant, and Cat Co 3 the quietest, and says all three get busy on weekends and Vietnamese public holidays. Vietnamtourism.com says the three are packed by noon and suggests walking 15 minutes north from Cat Co 3 along the cliff path to a small pebble cove. Rough Guides (25 November 2025) recommends April to October for Cat Co and calls Cat Co 3 the better one for snorkelling; our beaches guide has the numbers.

When to Go: Two Calendars That Disagree

The two seasonal guides do not agree, and we cannot settle it. Here is each in turn.

Best months for Cat Ba according to the two pages that give them. Treat the gap as real uncertainty.

Bhaya Cruises, 2026Late April to early June, or September and early OctoberJune to August is peak season; rain is most frequent from November to early January; November to March is 15 to 22°C

Where they overlap is useful: late April to early June and the first half of October look defensible by both, and winter is cool on either account. For the weather in the whole north, see Hanoi weather by month and Vietnam weather by month, and check a typhoon forecast the week before. Cat Ba is also one of the places where the rainy season matters, because boats stop in bad weather.

What a Weekend Costs

Put the prices from the sources side by side and Cat Ba is cheap, with the transport as the biggest item. The table uses the figures above and our own addition, which is arithmetic and not a quote. It leaves out food, drinks and entry fees we could not confirm.

A two-night budget for one person from the figures in this guide (vietnamtourism.com, 11 October 2026). The total is our own addition.

That is roughly US$62 to 70 at the cheapest and US$90 to 120 at the higher end, using the exchange rate the same page implies of 25,000 VND to the dollar. Our currency guide covers cash, and the travel costs guide puts it in a whole-trip budget. The sources gave no price for the national park, so add it.

Cat Ba, Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh in One Table

Many travellers must choose one. The table below is our own reading of the sources, so treat it as a rule of thumb and not a ranking.

What the sources did not tell us

Five things we could not confirm are the national park entrance fee, the prices of the Dinh Vu and Gia Luan ferries, whether the cable car near Dong Bai Port runs and at what price, which hotels we would recommend, and the date of the langur count. If any of these matters to your trip, ask the operator or the park office, and tell us what you find so that we can correct the page.

How Many Days, and a Plan

Bhaya Cruises ranks the options: one day is “rushed” and not recommended for a first visit, two days and one night is “a workable minimum” and three days and two nights is “the most recommended stay”. Vietnamtourism.com says you can do the park and the beaches, but we found no one-day itinerary we trust. The plan below is our own suggestion, built from the distances above and not a sourced itinerary.

  • Day 1: bus and ferry in the morning, lunch in the town, then the Cat Co beaches in the late afternoon, when the day-trippers have gone.
  • Day 2: the national park or the Cannon Fort in the morning, then a half-day kayak or boat trip in Lan Ha Bay in the afternoon.
  • Day 3: Viet Hai village, or a slow morning and the bus back to Hanoi.

For a longer northern route, the 5-day itinerary and the northern Vietnam guide put Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh side by side, and the best day trips from Hanoi guide ranks the shorter options. If you are choosing between Cat Ba and Ninh Binh, our Ninh Binh guide shows the other choice.

Fitting Cat Ba Around Sapa

Cat Ba and Sapa are at opposite ends of the north: the island is at sea level on the east coast, Sapa is in the mountains in the west, and Hanoi sits between them. The simple order is Sapa first, then Hanoi, then Cat Ba, because the trek is physical and the island is a place to rest. Our Hanoi to Sapa timetable shows the first leg, and the Sapa itinerary for 2, 3 or 4 days shows how to use the mountain days. If you want a day on foot before the island, a guided walk in the Muong Hoa valley is a good way to start, and the tour cards below show the options.

Frequently Asked Questions

By bus and ferry, usually 3 to 4.5 hours for US$8 to 17 (north-vietnam.com, October 2026), or by speedboat from Tuan Chau to Ben Beo in about 45 minutes to an hour, 2.5 to 3 hours in total (Bhaya Cruises). One source gives a combined ticket from the Old Quarter at 400,000 VND.

About 2.5 to 4.5 hours depending on the route and the source. Bus and ferry take 3 to 4.5 hours, the speedboat route 2.5 to 3 hours. The ferry timetable is not online and the last departure from Hai Phong is at 5 pm (vietnamtourism.com, 11 October 2026).

It has the same limestone karsts and, according to vietnamtourism.com, about 80 per cent fewer boats, but the source gives no counts. Both bays belong to the same UNESCO World Heritage listing, inscribed in 2023, so the choice is about crowds and access, not scenery.

Two days and one night is a workable minimum, and three days and two nights is the most recommended stay, according to Bhaya Cruises. One day from Hanoi is possible but rushed.

The sources disagree. Vietnamtourism.com says October to December is best and June to September is typhoon season, while Bhaya Cruises says skies are clear from May to September, June to August is peak season and the sweet spots are late April to early June and September to early October.

You can, but it is not recommended. The journey takes over three hours each way, which leaves little time for the national park, the beaches or a boat trip, and the last Hai Phong ferry leaves at 5 pm.

Vietnamtourism.com gives about US$12 (300,000 VND) for a half-day private kayak with hotel pick-up and US$15 (375,000 VND) return for a Lan Ha express ticket to Van Gia. Check prices with local agencies in Cat Ba Town.

It covers about half the island and is home to the endangered Cat Ba langur, of which about 68 remain in the wild according to Wikipedia. Day walks lead to the Cannon Fort and Trung Trang Cave. We found no confirmed entrance fee, so ask at the gate.
