ABOUT SAPA
Hmong Kids

Sa Pa is a quiet mountain town and home to a great diversity of ethnic minority peoples. The total population of 36,000 consists mostly of minority groups.

Besides the Kinh (Viet) people (15 percent) there are mainly five ethnic groups in Sa Pa: Hmong 52 percent, Dao 25 percent, Tay five percent, Giay two percent, and a small number of Xa Pho.

Approximately 7,000 live in Sa Pa, the other 36,000 being scattered in small communes throughout the district. wikipedia

Sa Pa has cool weather. It not too hot and not too cold. Sapa is in northern Vietnam.

It can have 4 seasons in one day! Sapa has stunning mountain views of “Fansipan 3.143m (the highest peak in the Indochina peninsula), Hoang Lien and Dragon” and traditional villages such as Lao Chai, Ta Van, Ta Phin, and Cat Cat.

The best time to visit Sapa and do trekking Sapa is in August and September when the green and yellow terraced rice fields are in full splendor, and many families are harvesting.

This experience was absolutely wonderful and something I would highly recommend to anyone looking to immerse themselves in the Sapa villages. Our hosts were incredibly kind and generous, making sure we were always comfortable. The food was amazing and the facilities within the home were very comfortable. There was a hot shower, a comfortable and warm bed, and accomodating hosts. We did sapa trekking in February and it was still cool with the weather, but if you are hiking around this time then prepare for there to be mud. I only wore old runners and I was sliding all over the place so make sure you have appropriate footwear! You will also have people follow you through the tour who will try and sell you things. Do not feel obligated to buy anything, you can tell them to leave if you need. Other than this, it was overall an amazing experience! 10/10!

Tzu is an awesome guide with a quirky sense of humour - So we booked everything through Sinh and he has a great level of english. We had a conference call with him via WhatsApp and arranged everything even paid the 60 USD in advance and we couldn’t be happier to have booked it with him. His sister in law (Tzu) was the one who took us on the actual trekking tour and she was a bright spark with a quirky sense of humour. She made the whole experience so much more amazing. The trek is not for the faint of heart. We did the 2D 1N and it rained throughout. It did not stop raining the whole time we were in Sapa or in the valley and I’m not exaggerating. Nothing that a good pair of raincoats and boots couldn’t handle though. The views were astoundingly beautiful. The simple way of life the locals lead is nothing short of happiness. Love love loved it. The trek through the bamboo forest is tough but the waterfall at the end is spectacular. Prepare for the rain (just in case) take your things in plastic bags, don’t underestimate it like we did. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my entire life. Definitely recommend it, don’t miss it for the world

Hands down, one of the best experiences I've had whole traveling through Vietnam. Sinh's family will really go out oftheur way to make you feel at home from the moment the tour starts. We hiked all the way up the mountains, and honestly, you'll never be left without a beathtaking view or a smile from one of the friendly locals. Tzu, Sinh's sister and my guide during the trek, was one of the most informative, generous, smartest and funniest guides you'll ever have; she and her family will make your trek in Sapa really special! She professional and had a lot to share about local culture. If you're looking for a fun, meaningful trek that will leave you tired yet will make you reflect on what's important in life, this is the one for you. Book your trek today 🙂

We arrived in front of Notre Dame church in Sapa and met up with chu, our guide for the stay. When we left sapa, we were accompanied by two Hmong women for the first leg of the trip. After a couple of hours through some breathtaking nature, and a packet of sticky rice they had made, we got to a rest stop where we ordered some food. The women that had accompanied us then showed us some goods they had made, and we bought some scarves. We then continued our trip through the mountain-forest to a small town where we were going to stay at a house they are renting for these tours. They made us some food and we sat and talked for a while with chu's brother and husband, and made plans for the next day. The next day, we got to see chu's home before we went trekking up the mountain. On the way we stopped at the home of chu's mother, where they made us lunch and we got to try out some traditional Hmong clothes. The rest of the day we walked around the mountain and got to see some of the most amazing nature Vietnam has to offer. Back at the house they made us dinner, and thought us how to make bamboo sticky rice in the fire. The third day was the shortest one, but also one of the most beautiful one. We went trekking to a bamboo forrest, before we got to a large waterfall. We then continued to another resting station, where we ate lunch. After lunch we got into a taxi, which drove us back to sapa where we got to take a shower and change clothes. All in all, this has been a really great experience. Sinh and Chu were great hosts, and it was really great to meet their family and see how they live. We got to learn a lot about the Hmong culture and way of life, and are very grateful for their patience and humility. We recomend doing this trip for anyone that want's to get close to the real world of the Hmong people

Wow! Where to start.... The booking process was simple and blew our minds how easy it all was once we got to the hanoi train station! The train exceeded expectations, the transfer from the station to sapa was flawless, friendly driver and the period between drop off and meeting our guide was filled with delicious breakfast and kind hosts at the restaurant! We meet our fabulous guide Xee, who walked in with a cheeky friendly fun smile and we knew this was going to be fun. Xee was patient as we got organised and selected new shoes for the trip as it was pouring with rain, he told us the plan for the day and got us moving. Xee's english was great and he stopped along the way for beautiful photo opportunities and information about the area, the rice paddys and the life and culture of the local people. Xee had many laughs with us and provided epic support along the very wet and at times challenge areas of the hike! We got to the home stay- again wow! The hosts were so very friendly and the room was exceptional. Our view was over the valley and just watching as the clouds passed by was awesome. Sue and her family provided delicious food- some of the best we have had this trip. We all ate together and we were able to join conversation and watch the children play, we felt welcomed and part of the family. The second day was again rainy and Xee organised our bags to meet us after the hike as the trail was going to be a lot harder. Our hike was a lot more challenging then the previous day and thre was a lot of laughter, and close calls with bums hitting the ground! Xee lead us through and joined our fun. Lunches both das were delicious and in some of the beautiful country side. We got back to sapa and runited with our bags with ease. We can not thank Xee and Sinh for the wonderful trip and the organisation of the whole process for us. We would most certainly recommend this team and would return in a heart beat for another hike with this team. Thank you for a memorable experience and a chance to see you beautiful area. 10/10 Note: would recommend taking decent walking shoes that will get wet and dirty and light weight bags with water proof jackets, we were not that organised.

Excellent walking tour through Hmong villages around Sapa. We were lead by Sinh's sister in law Tzu. At the beginning the path was a bit steep and muddy and I wished I had better grips on my footwear. However it was worth it, as it was very scenic and peaceful. The rest of the tour was on a smoother path. A woman and girl followed us until lunchtime. Initially I was confused by this but they helped on the steep parts and at lunch showed their handicrafts for sale. We did buy some things as they were very nice. We went to more craft shops in the latter villages, also nice; more so than the shops in Sapa. We don't believe you would find this route on your own so really recommend getting a guide, and Tzu gave us great additional insight into the Hmong people. She is a very kind person and good company. Highly recommended.

Sometimes when traveling it is difficult to receive an authentic and true experience when going with a guide, but with Sinh it is truly going on an adventure with a long time friend. He was able to accommodate the trip and make it even more enjoyable than expected. I also loved how up front he was with everything and we did not have any surprises regarding trip details. We got to practice some Vietnamese, English and Spanish. He is very sweet and knowledgeable about Sapa and the surrounding areas and he really enjoyed sharing his culture with us. Thank you Sinh for making our experience in Sapa better than we could have hoped. Thank you!

The three day trek was an incredible experience, and hands down the best thing I did during my month in Vietnam. Sinh's sister Bau was so knowledgeable and patient answering all of my questions about the different tribes in the area. Sinh was so kind to provide me with some rubber boots for the first day as it had just rained. The trek can get a bit intense at some points, but there were plenty of chances to pause for water, pictures, or just to catch your breath. Plan to hike around 13km each of the first 2 days, and 5km the last day. The path is varied, and we trekked on roads, narrow dirt paths, wooded trails, and around the edges of rice paddies. I will definitely be booking another trek with Sinh in the future.

I have been traveling South East Asia for 6 months, Vietnam for over 4 months and this was one of my best experiences so far. We started in the south and I have found that this country just gets more and more beautiful the further north we go. I had seen pictures of Sapa and knew I wanted to take my daughter when she came to visit. I usually avoid guided tours and prefer to do things alone, finding my own way. But I was really keen to learn about the Hmong ethnic minority so I decided to book a trek. That's when I found Sinh, and I'm so very glad I did! Sinh was absolutely wonderful from start to finish. I had so many questions before I booked with him and he patiently and professionally answered them all. The whole experience was absolutely magical. We were a group of 12 and right from the beginning we all bonded so well. The trekking was amazing, the sights, the sounds, and the people. The homestays that Sinh had arranged for us were such beautiful little relaxing retreats after long days trekking, the food was authentic, so tasty and plentiful … and the apple rice wine … wow! Sinh is part of the H’mong ethnic minority, and his English is fantastic which meant that we all got to learn so much about the culture, the people and the land. It was amazing to learn so much about all we were seeing and the daily lives of the people. Sinh's a wonderfully warm person. Very friendly and great fun, his enthusiasm is infectious. Thank you so much Sinh, your knowledge, positive energy, and warm personality made the tour so much more than we could have expected. I can't recommend highly enough !!!

I was Invited to go to Sapa and enjoy the trip organized by Sinh. Expecting nothing as I had heard so many review on how Sapa is boring, I was shocked and amazed by the scenery of Sapa Sinh showed us through the tour. All the terraced rice field, the H’mong children smile, the sky, the cloud and much more than that totally rocks my mind. I am 100% sure that this is the Sapa I was looking for. Natural, untouched, beautiful and ... I guess you will have to discover that by yourself with Sinh (don’t wanna be a spoiler). Pls come and enjoy! Sinh is so far the best Sapa tour guide you need while staying in Sapa! Thank you Sinh, wish you and your family all the best wishes in the future!

Sinh is one of the friendliest persons I’ve ever met. Always with a bright smile, he told us everything important about the area, vegetation, history and the people living in Sa Pa. My favourite moment during our tour was the visit in his family. Sinh explained us a lot things about his ethnic minority and the work in the rice fields. I was really impressed and became so emotional about the stories, that I had to think about this conversation the next days. (Honestly, it was a lifechanging moment for me.) Sinh, thank you for everything. We could never find a better guide than you and I am so thankful to meet you. See you, when I will come back to Vietnam.

We enjoyed the trek with Sinh and his brother. We hiked through corn fields, went over barbed wire fences, crossed streams and balanced our way across muddy rice terraces. Our shoes were dirty compared to other tourists taking tours from other companies... and that's exactly what we were looking for. Thank you Sinh (and baby brother) for the fun experience. Tip: Wear trekking shoes with good grip!

After some easy and effective communication with Sinh to organise this trek, our local guide La met us at our hotel at 9am to get started. The trek was fantastic with La giving us insight into the local minorities, whilst taking us on the road less travelled and moving through the rice fields and villages. We came across very few other tourists as La wanted to take us on the quieter roads/paths. This meant that we saw small villages, families and the way of living. It felt very insightful and was very interesting. As we travelled further, taking in the beautiful scenery we stopped for lunch and enjoyed some fried noodles and vegetables. We finished the tour after crossing a river and visiting another local minority village which was a lot busier and seemed to be where a lot of the tourists went. However, La took as away from the main tracks and we took in the last of the beautiful views before being picked up and taken back to our hotel. This was a brilliant experience! Thank you to La!

Sinh is an extremely friendly person who I would definitely recommend meeting. He was knowledgable and accommodating. We booked a day trek with him and asked about transportation. He arranged for a shuttle to pick up the six of us at Lao Cai train station and take us to our hotel. Thing is .. we booked the wrong week! We booked a week later than we arrived. We sent a message to Sinh at 6:00 AM when we arrived at the train station the morning of our intended trek day. He was understanding and luckily, was free for a tour. We had to arrange alternative transportation because it was last second and we were already at the train station. Sinh met us at our hotel promptly at 9 AM. He brought us each a bottle of water and explained the route he would be taking us on. He examined our footwear to make sure they were appropriate for the trek. Along the trek, he made the effort to have some conversation with each person in the group. He was there to help us when we seemed stuck on the trail. He arranged for lunch part way through the hike which was pretty good. He also had a shuttle pick us up when we were done trekking to take us back to our hotel. It took us about 6ish hours to complete the trek. Time will depend on how fast your group moves. This was a great experience at a brand new place. Sinh definitely helped make it great. Thank you, Sinh!!

Sinh also provided us with lunch and water, which was an added bonus. We would recommend Sinh for an authentic experience trekking through Sa Pa. We'll never forget such a beautiful day 🙂

Trekking with Sinh was by far the highlight of our stay in Sapa. Sinh is a Hmong guide and while you walk, he will teach you the culture of the different indigenous people of the Sapa valley. As guide he is always trying to give you the best experience and make sure you are safe (rocks are often slippery) Sinh will adapt to all kind of needs. You can do a small trek or, like us, a one day 20km trek. You can even do homestay in a village. You can't go wrong with Sinh

I was so bloody happy to supppry Sinh as a member of the Black H’mong. Many guiding experiences do not benefit the local villages due to foreign ownership. Sinh connected me with other locals and was so fun to run down the trails with. If you’re in shape and looking to get a good sweat and laugh along the way, he’s your man. I spent a total of 4 days with Sinh on various treks throughout the valley and up Fansipan. I feel fortunate to have found him on Airbnb and make a new friend in Sapa.

We did a 2 day, 1 night trek with Sinh and had a truly splendid experience. Sinh met us at the Sapa city center (Notre Dame cathedral), introduced himself and his Wife who is currently his "training guide" explained the trip itinerary and we set off on a beautiful adventure. The terrain was a mixture of rugged side hill trails, small dirt roads, paved (yet remote) scooter trails, and viaduct paths. We never grew tired of the views, unclose encounters with vietnamese farm life was a pleasant surprise, meals were everything we could have hoped for, the homestay was clean, the shower was hot, everybody was friendly. You will notice that Sapa is the center of massive tourist development by huge corporations. It was really cool to support Sinh in his small business entrepreneurship. For a kid who grew up without electricity, in a family of rice farmers it is pretty impressive that he learned english, and built a trekking tour company from scratch. If you would rather hike than sit in a shuttle bus, this is the experience for you.

This is the question everyone asks before they come to Sapa, so my answer is it depends on your level.

Let me explain:

In summer (June to August): I would say everyone can do trekking in Sapa, you can choose a tour as your level because this time it’s sunny, the temperature at about 25 – 30 Degree C, therefore the trail is dry, that makes you step strong. This is a good time to visit Sapa.

In Winter (December to February): It did not rain much but someday it’s misty, so it will make the rout slippery and muddy, so this time is difficult to trek in Sapa, but if you book a tour with us, we will make sure to take you to the easy trail and safe.

In Autumn (September to November): It offers a dry terrain in Sapa; you can easily see the green nature of the rice fields. This season is also a good time for you trekking in Sapa.

In Spring (March to June): This period is one of the best times to trek in Sapa, it comes with cool weather, sunny days, a period that precedes the blossoming nature of flowers and plants, so you will easily to walking through rice fields.

We brought a lot of people came to all Sapa Trekking destination; they are trekker, some routs it still a hard for them, but it is straightforward for some people as well. So if you afraid trekking, there are only some things (keys) you should have during trekking in Sapa as the next answer.
