Nam Kang Ho Tao, located in Vietnam, is often regarded as one of the toughest mountains to climb in the country due to its intricate and rugged terrain. The path to the summit is not only long and steep, but it also presents numerous challenges, such as vertical rock walls and fallen trees that force climbers to crawl instead of walking straight, making it a risky and nerve-wracking experience. However, the more challenging the climb, the more alluring Nam Kang becomes to thrill-seeking mountaineers.

In addition to its challenging terrain, the ancient forest surrounding Nam Kang offers an opportunity to appreciate the natural beauty of the area. The changing colors of maple leaves and the towering Pơ Mu forest, with its enormous trunks, provide a mesmerizing view. The path to the top of the mountain is surrounded by dense bamboo and thorny bushes. If you’re fortunate, you might even get to witness a sea of clouds floating by.

Itinerary

Day 0: Hanoi – Sapa / Overnight Bus

At 22:00: The sleeper bus will pick you up at 5 Tran Nguyen Han to Sapa, Lao Cai.
It takes about 6 hours to get in Sapa.
The bus will drop you at at 436 Đường Điện Biên Phủ, Sapa

Overnight: Overnight bus

Day 1: Sapa – Ban Den Thang

Route: Hanoi – Noi Bai Highway – Lao Cai – Sapa

Transportation: High-quality overnight bus

Guests can take the bus from the airport, so it’s recommended to book a flight to Noi Bai before 22:30. Daily departures allow guests to arrive in Sapa before or after the trekking ends.

At 04:00, guests will arrive in Sapa, check in at the hotel, rest, and freshen up.
At 06:00, guests will have breakfast at a restaurant in Sapa.
At 07:00, the bus will take the group to Ban Den Thang, the starting point of the trek, which is about 28km away from the center of Sapa.
At 09:00, guests will arrive at the trekking point, where they can hand over their luggage to the porter.
At 12:00, guests can take a rest and have lunch at the big stream.
At 13:00, the trek continues, and guests will climb the high slopes of Nam Kang.
At 17:30, the group will arrive at the campsite, a grassy clearing next to the stream, and rest after the first day’s trek.
At 18:30, guests will enjoy dinner.

Overnight: Sleep in tents with sleeping bags and insulation mats.

Day 2: Summit of Nam Kang Ho Tao

At 05:00, guests will wake up, have breakfast with coffee or ginger tea, and prepare for the final leg of the journey to conquer the summit.
At 06:00, the trek to the summit of Nam Kang Ho Tao begins.
At 11:30, guests will reach the peak, rest, take photos, and check in.
At 12:00, lunch will be served on the summit, and the group will start moving back to the campsite.
At 17:00, the group will return to the campsite, rest, and have dinner.

Overnight: Sleep in tents with sleeping bags and insulation mats.

Day 3: Return to Sapa – Hanoi

At 05:00, guests will wake up, have breakfast, and pack up.
At 06:00, the descent begins.
At 12:00, guests can take a rest and have lunch.
At 14:00, the bus will take guests back to Sapa.
At 16:00, guests can enjoy a Red Dao herbal bath.
At 19:00, guests will have dinner at a restaurant in Sapa and celebrate successful journey.
At 23:00, the guests will board the overnight bus back to Hanoi.
At 04:30, you will arrive in Hanoi, the bus will drop you at the 5 Tran Nguyen Han, Hanoi. End of the trip..

The difficulty of the tour to conquer Nam Kang Ho Tao is considered challenging. The trek requires participants to hike through high slopes and climb to the summit, which can be physically demanding. Participants should have a good level of fitness, endurance, and be prepared for long hours of trekking. It is recommended that participants have prior trekking experience and undertake some physical training before the tour.
Additionally, the tour includes camping in tents, which can be uncomfortable for some people. Overall, the tour requires participants to be in good physical and mental condition to successfully complete the journey.

Raincost
Trekking shoes (high-top ones are the best) provide a comfortable and snug fit with a good grip sole.
Clothing for the 3-day-2-night mountain trek:
- 2 long pants (preferably quick-drying) and 1 long-sleeved shirt (preferably a thin windbreaker) to wear while trekking.
- 3-4 T-shirts
- A warm, thick jacket for the evenings in the camp.
- A super-thin wool or down jacket to wear while sleeping.
- A pair of beekeeper slippers to wear at the campsite.
- A scarf (not a woolen one) to prevent cold and easy to dry when wet.
- 3-5 pairs of long, thick socks (avoid low-cut ones).
- Personal items: mosquito repellent, sunglasses, hat, camera, underwear, and personal hygiene items.
