About This Trek

In September, when the paddies turn gold before harvest, the Muong Hoa Valley looks like nothing else in Vietnam. The route we take on this 2-day trek catches it from above first — a 1 km uphill section from Sapa to a mountain viewpoint where, on a clear morning, you can see Fansipan in the distance and the full sweep of the valley below you. Then we descend into it, and the valley wraps around you for the rest of Day 1: cardamom forests, steep paddy terraces, the village of Hang Da (Black H'mong, lunch here with a family), and Hau Thao for the night. The homestay is in a traditional wooden H'mong house. Dinner is cooked at the family kitchen, and the guides usually sit with you and talk for hours over rice wine if you're interested.

Day 2 is the part most guides don't take their groups to. We leave Hau Thao early and descend to Giang Ta Chai — a waterfall, a Red Dao village, and a 1,850 m ridge with the best panoramic view of the entire Muong Hoa Valley. Then the route drops through Ta Van (Giay minority), Lao Chai (Black H'mong, lunch), and finishes at Y Linh Ho before transport back to Sapa around 3 PM. Five villages, three ethnic minorities, two full days in the valley — this is one of the most complete introductions to the region we offer.

The route is graded Moderate. Day 1 has a short uphill at the start, then sustained downhill. Day 2 involves a climb to 1,850 m before the final descent. People with normal walking fitness complete it without difficulty. If you want the full valley experience in two days without compromising on cultural depth, this is the route. Our guides Tzu Hang and Lo Hu grew up in these villages and know every family along the way. Trekking Tour Sapa holds Vietnam National Tourism Authority license No. 10-078/2023 — your booking is fully protected.

Full Itinerary

Route: Sapa → viewpoint → Hang Da → Hau Thao (Day 1) · Hau Thao → Giang Ta Chai → Ta Van → Lao Chai → Y Linh Ho (Day 2)  |  27 km / 16.8 miles · 2 days

DAY 1 — Sapa to Hau Thao Homestay (~15 km, ~5.5 hours)

09:00 AM
Hotel Pickup — Sapa Town
We pick you up at your hotel anywhere in Sapa Town — or meet us at the Trekking Tour Sapa Office, 105 Thach Son Street. Your guide introduces the 2-day route, checks your gear, and explains what to expect in the valley.
09:30 AM
Mountain Viewpoint — Fansipan and Muong Hoa Valley
A 1 km uphill walk from Sapa town to the mountain viewpoint above the valley. On clear days you can see Fansipan (3,143 m) in the distance and the full sweep of rice terraces in the Muong Hoa Valley below. Your guide points out the villages you will pass through over the next two days.
~11:30 AM
Hang Da Village — Black H'mong Community
After descending from the viewpoint through the terraced fields, we enter Hang Da village — a Black H'mong community. The guide introduces you to local agriculture: water buffalo in the fields, vegetable plots, traditional houses. This is where the valley begins to feel genuinely remote.
~12:30 PM
Lunch — Hang Da Family Restaurant
Lunch at a family-run restaurant in Hang Da — Vietnamese dishes cooked fresh, eaten with a view over the rice paddies. Rest here for 30–40 minutes before continuing to the homestay.
~15:00 PM
Hau Thao Village — Black H'mong Homestay
Arrive at the homestay in Hau Thao — a traditional Black H'mong wooden house. Rest, hot shower available. Dinner is cooked by the host family: rice, vegetables, local dishes, and usually rice wine offered. The guides sit with you and talk. If you're curious about H'mong culture, this is the evening to ask questions.

DAY 2 — Hau Thao to Sapa via Giang Ta Chai and the Ridge (~12 km, ~5 hours)

~07:00 AM
Sunrise Breakfast at the Homestay
Wake to views of the valley in morning mist. Breakfast at the homestay before the second day begins. The valley is typically quieter in the morning — fewer people, cooler air, birds in the rice paddies.
~08:00 AM
Giang Ta Chai — Waterfall and Red Dao Village
Trek down from Hau Thao to Giang Ta Chai — a waterfall and a Red Dao minority community. The Red Dao are immediately recognizable by their red headwear and intricate embroidery, quite different from Black H'mong culture. The waterfall is a good rest stop and photo point.
~10:00 AM
Ridge at 1,850 m — Best Valley Panorama
The route climbs to a ridge at 1,850 m — the highest point of Day 2 and the best panoramic view of the entire Muong Hoa Valley. On clear days you can see the terraces stretching from Y Linh Ho all the way to the mountains on the Chinese border. Take your time here.
~11:30 AM
Ta Van Village — Giay and Black H'mong Minority
Descend to Ta Van, home to both Giay and Black H'mong families — the only place in the valley where the two groups live alongside each other. The guide explains the differences in house design, clothing, and customs between the two communities.
~12:30 PM
Lao Chai — Lunch at Family Restaurant
Lunch in Lao Chai village, one of the most intact Black H'mong communities in the Muong Hoa Valley. The guide usually knows the family running the restaurant — a genuine, unhurried meal.
~15:00 PM
Y Linh Ho — Return Transport to Sapa
Walk to Y Linh Ho village, then transport back to Sapa town. Drop-off at your hotel or the office (105 Thach Son Street). Tour ends around 3:00–3:30 PM.
This is a 2-day trek. Day 1: 15 km, 5.5 hours. Day 2: 12 km, 5 hours including a ridge at 1,850 m. People with moderate fitness complete it comfortably. If you have specific concerns about the terrain, message us before booking.

How It Works

1
Book & confirm — Pay online or message us on WhatsApp. We confirm your booking within 2 hours — you'll receive all the details you need: date, time, pickup point, and what to bring.
2
We pick you up — Your guide arrives at your hotel at 9:00 AM. Groups are max 12 people — usually 4–8 on most days. And if you get lucky? Sometimes you'll be the only one booked that day, which means you get the guide entirely to yourself — a private experience at the group price.
3
Trek together — You share the route with other travelers. Same guide, same villages, same experience — just more people to share it with. Great for solo travelers.
4
Back by 3:00 PM — Plenty of time for a rest, shower, or dinner before your evening plans.
Best for: solo travelers, couples, and small groups who want a 2-day immersive trek through the Muong Hoa Valley with a shared guide and great value.
1
Book your group — Tell us your group size. Larger groups pay less per person — 4 people at $65/person is our most popular private option for families and friend groups.
2
Dedicated guide, your pace — No strangers. Your guide focuses entirely on your group. Stop longer at photos, skip sections you don't want, adjust the route.
3
Flexible timing — Want an earlier start? A different lunch spot? We can customize the day around your schedule and preferences.
4
Private transport throughout — Your own vehicle picks up and drops off. No sharing with other groups at any point.
Best for: couples wanting 2 days entirely to themselves in the valley, families with children, or friend groups of 3–6 who want flexible pace across both days without strangers in the group.

Why Trek With Us

Born in These Mountains
Our guides — Tzu Hang and Lo Hu — grew up in Black H'mong villages along the Muong Hoa Valley. They don't just know the trails; they know the families, the fields, and the stories behind every turn.
Routes the Crowds Don't Take
Because our community roots run deep, we access trails through private farmland and minority villages that mainstream operators simply cannot enter. You won't be walking the same path as 50 other tour groups.
Licensed & Fully Transparent
We hold a Vietnam National Tourism Authority operator license (10-078/2023/CDLQGVN-GP LHQT). Price shown is the price you pay — no surprise fees, no hidden commissions, no tipping pressure.
Small Groups — Real Attention
Maximum 12 people per group tour. Every private tour is one-guide, one-group. You're never lost in a crowd, never rushed. We move at your pace and stop wherever you want a photo.

★★★★★

"Day 2 completely caught us off guard. We expected more rice field walking but the climb to the 1,850 m ridge was genuinely dramatic — panoramic view of the whole valley on both sides. The guide (Lo Hu) grew up near Hau Thao and pointed out his family's land as we walked past. The homestay dinner was the best meal we ate in Vietnam. The Red Dao village at Giang Ta Chai was something we hadn't seen anywhere else on the trip."

"Excellent 2-day route — more varied than I expected. The morning viewpoint on Day 1 gives context to the whole valley before you descend into it, which is a smart way to start. The homestay was basic but warm and I slept well. Only minus: Day 2 is a longer walking day than the itinerary suggests if you take your time at the viewpoints (we did). Start early. The guide was patient and gave real cultural context, not just walking commentary."

"We'd done the 1-day valley trek the previous year and came back specifically for this 2-day route to see if the valley looked different with more time. It does. The ridge on Day 2 was a genuine highlight — you stand there and see the whole thing at once, including where you walked the day before. Having the guide explain who lives in each village and the history between Black H'mong and Red Dao communities made it feel like a real education, not just a hike."
