About This Trek
The trail starts in cardamom forest above Sapa town — the smell of it hits you before you see anything. The route follows the stream that feeds Silver Waterfall down through the upper slopes, past the waterfall itself (a 100m drop that you hear before you round the corner), then continues into Ma Tra village, one of the few Red Dao communities accessible on foot from Sapa without a driver. Most tour groups here arrive by vehicle and stay fifteen minutes. We walk in, which means we leave through the back of the village and join the river valley trail that the Red Dao use daily — a completely different experience.
Lunch is at a local family's home in the valley — cooked over wood, whatever they prepared that morning. The afternoon section of the route passes through traditional H'mong farmland along the river before climbing gently to Ta Phin. Ta Phin is mostly known for its Red Dao herbal bath tourism, which is fine, but what we usually point out is the old French-era monastery ruins at the edge of the village — a reminder that this area has been receiving visitors for over a century. Return transport picks you up at the village entrance and brings you back to Sapa by 17:00.
The whole route is 10 km / 6 miles on well-maintained trails. Some sections near the waterfall can be muddy and slippery after rain — we always check conditions the morning of the tour and adjust if necessary. Our guides Tzu Hang and Lo Hu are both Black H'mong, born in communities near this route. Trekking Tour Sapa holds Vietnam National Tourism Authority operator license (No. 10-078/2023).

Full Day Itinerary
Route: Sapa Town → Silver Waterfall → Ma Tra Village → River Valley → Lunch → Ta Phin Village | ~10 km / 6 miles · ~5 hours · Easy
08:30 AM
Hotel Pickup — Sapa Town
We pick you up at your hotel anywhere in Sapa Town — or meet us at the Trekking Tour Sapa Office, 105 Thach Son Street. Pickup at 8:30 AM. The drive to the trailhead takes about 20 minutes. Your guide briefs you on the route and trail conditions — particularly important around the waterfall section, which can be slippery when wet.
09:00 AM
Silver Waterfall (Thac Bac)
Silver Waterfall is a 100m cascade on the slopes above Sapa, fed by the mountain streams that drain the Hoang Lien Son range. You hear it before you see it. The stone steps up to the base of the waterfall are steep and damp — but there are handrails and the view from the platform is worth it. Most visitors who come by tourist bus get 20 minutes here. We get as long as we want, because we walked in.
10:30 AM
Ma Tra Village — Red Dao Community
Ma Tra sits above the waterfall on a ridge — a Red Dao village known for its traditional embroidered costumes and herbal medicine practice. Most tours don't come here; the only way in on foot is the trail from Silver Waterfall, which mainstream tour buses can't access. Your guide introduces the community and explains the visual differences between Red Dao and H'mong textile traditions.
12:30 PM
River Valley Trail — Home-Cooked Lunch
Lunch is at a local family's home in the valley — rice, vegetables, and whatever else was cooked that morning. The trail from Ma Tra descends through cardamom and bamboo, following the river downstream. It's one of the quietest stretches of this tour — mostly birdsong and water. Take your time here before the afternoon section.
14:30 PM
Ta Phin Village — Red Dao Heritage
Ta Phin is the final village on this route — another Red Dao community, better known but still interesting for the 19th-century French monastery ruins at its edge. Your guide walks you through the village and explains the history of the ruins and the community's relationship with them. Transport picks you up here for the return journey.
17:00 PM
Return to Sapa Town
Transport brings you back to your hotel or the Trekking Tour Sapa Office at 105 Thach Son Street. You're back by 17:00, with time to shower before dinner.
The waterfall area can be slippery after heavy rain. If conditions are unsafe on the day of your tour, we notify you in advance and either adjust the route or offer a full refund. Check the weather 48 hours before — and bring a rain jacket regardless.

How It Works
1
Book & confirm — Pay online or message us on WhatsApp. We confirm your booking within 2 hours — you'll receive all the details you need: date, time, pickup point, and what to bring.
2
We pick you up — Your guide arrives at your hotel at 8:30 AM. Groups are max 12 people — usually 4–8 on most days. And if you get lucky? Sometimes you'll be the only one booked that day, which means you get the guide entirely to yourself — a private experience at the group price.
3
Trek together — You share the route with other travelers. Same guide, same villages, same experience — just more people to share it with. Great for solo travelers.
4
Back by 17:00 — A well-paced day. Plenty of time to shower, explore the Sapa night market, or relax before dinner.
Best for: travelers who want to see Sapa's waterfall AND authentic minority villages — not just the standard rice terrace route.
1
Book your group — Tell us your group size. Larger groups pay less per person — 4 people at $48/person is our most popular private option for families and small groups.
2
Dedicated guide, your pace — No strangers. Your guide focuses entirely on your group. Stop longer at photos, skip sections you don't want, adjust the route.
3
Flexible timing — Want an earlier start? A different lunch spot? We can customize the day around your schedule and preferences.
4
Private transport throughout — Your own vehicle picks up and drops off. No sharing with other groups at any point.
Best for: families traveling with elderly parents, couples who want the guide entirely to themselves, or anyone with mobility concerns who needs a fully flexible pace.

Frequently Asked Questions
This tour visits Silver Waterfall (Thac Bac), a 100m cascade on the slopes above Sapa town. It is one of the most powerful waterfalls in the Lao Cai region — particularly in the rainy season (June–September) when the flow is strongest. The approach involves stone steps which can be slippery when wet. Outside the rainy season the steps are manageable with normal walking shoes; in the rainy season, hiking shoes with grip are strongly recommended.
Yes. This is rated Easy — suitable for anyone who can walk comfortably for 5 hours with breaks. The waterfall section involves some steps and uneven terrain. The village sections and river valley are flat to gently rolling. We recommend wearing walking shoes or light hiking footwear. Walking poles are available at our office.
The route visits Ma Tra village (Red Dao minority — traditional embroidery and herbal medicine practices) and Ta Phin village (also Red Dao, with 19th-century French monastery ruins at its edge). The river valley section passes through Black H'mong farmland. Unlike most Sapa tours which focus on the Muong Hoa Valley H'mong communities, this route gives you exposure to Red Dao culture as well.
Included: English-speaking local H'mong guide, Silver Waterfall entrance fee, home-cooked lunch at a local family, a small water bottle per person, and return transport to your hotel in Sapa Town. Not included: personal travel insurance, extra beverages, tips for the guide, and Hanoi–Sapa transport.
The waterfall is most impressive in the rainy season (June–September) when the flow is highest. For the best combination of waterfall volume and comfortable walking conditions, May and October are ideal. In the dry season (November–March), the waterfall is smaller but the trails are drier and easier to navigate. The village sections are interesting year-round.

Why Trek With Us
Born in These Mountains
Our guides — Tzu Hang and Lo Hu — grew up in Black H'mong villages along the Muong Hoa Valley. They don't just know the trails; they know the families, the fields, and the stories behind every turn.
Routes the Crowds Don't Take
Because our community roots run deep, we access trails through private farmland and minority villages that mainstream operators simply cannot enter. You won't be walking the same path as 50 other tour groups.
Licensed & Fully Transparent
We hold a Vietnam National Tourism Authority operator license (10-078/2023/CDLQGVN-GP LHQT). Price shown is the price you pay — no surprise fees, no hidden commissions, no tipping pressure.
Small Groups — Real Attention
Maximum 12 people per group tour. Every private tour is one-guide, one-group. You're never lost in a crowd, never rushed. We move at your pace and stop wherever you want a photo.
"The Silver Waterfall alone would have been worth the day, but the rest of the route made it exceptional. Ma Tra village was something I'd never have found on my own — the guide walked us through it slowly and introduced us to a family who showed us traditional Red Dao embroidery. The lunch at the valley home was fresh and generous. Back in Sapa by 5 PM with time to explore the market."

Waterfalls and Traditional Villages · March 2026
★★★★☆
"Really good tour but I want to be honest: the waterfall steps are steep and slippery in March when it's rainy season. Wear proper shoes, not sandals. Once past that section, the rest of the trail is easy and beautiful — the river valley walk is especially lovely. The guide was knowledgeable and patient. Ta Phin and the old monastery ruins were a bonus I wasn't expecting."

Waterfalls and Traditional Villages · February 2026
★★★★★
"We did the rice terrace tour the day before and chose this one specifically to see something different. Very good decision. Silver Waterfall is impressive — especially in February when the flow was strong. Ma Tra village was extraordinary, completely different from the H'mong communities on the rice terrace routes. The guide explained the Red Dao textile traditions in detail. One of the best days in Vietnam."
