About This Trek
The trail starts in Y Linh Ho with the smell of morning mist still hanging over the paddy terraces. This is one of the rice-growing paths that people in Lao Chai have walked for generations — you're not on a tourist boardwalk, you're on the actual route between villages. By 9:30 AM the mist usually starts lifting, and you get the terraced staircase in changing light as you descend into the valley. It's the kind of scenery that makes people stop walking to take photos, and we plan time for that.
The route covers the full width of the Muong Hoa Valley — from the Black H'mong terraces of Y Linh Ho and Lao Chai down to the Giay community in Ta Van, where lunch is at a family's house rather than a restaurant. After lunch we cross the Muong Hoa stream and follow the bamboo-lined trail toward Hau Thao. The bamboo section is the part that surprises people most — it's quiet, shaded and feels completely removed from the terrace tourism a few kilometres back. Around 16:00 your return transport picks you up in Sapa town.
This is an Easy-graded trek covering approximately 10 km / 6 miles. The terrain includes some stone-paved terrace paths and one gentle descent after Lao Chai — nothing requiring technical skill, but walking shoes with grip will make it more comfortable, especially after rain. Our guides Tzu Hang and Lo Hu — both Black H'mong from the Muong Hoa Valley — know every family along this route by name. That's why lunch feels like a home visit rather than a stop at a restaurant. Trekking Tour Sapa holds a Vietnam National Tourism Authority operator license (No. 10-078/2023) — your booking is fully protected.

Full Day Itinerary
Route: Sapa Town → Y Linh Ho → Lao Chai → Ta Van (Lunch) → Bamboo Forest → Hau Thao → Return | ~10 km / 6 miles · ~5–6 hours walking
08:30 AM
Hotel Pickup — Your Hotel in Sapa Town
We pick you up at your hotel anywhere in Sapa Town — or meet us at the Trekking Tour Sapa Office, 105 Thach Son Street. Your guide briefs the day's route and we head out while the mist is still lifting off the terraces.
09:00 AM
Y Linh Ho Village — First Terrace Views
We descend into Y Linh Ho along the terraced path that the Black H'mong have walked between their paddies for generations. The staircase terraces here are some of the most photogenic in Muong Hoa Valley — particularly in September when the paddy turns gold. Your guide points out the different rice varieties and explains the planting cycle that shapes everything you see in the valley.
10:00 AM
Lao Chai — Black H'mong Village
Lao Chai is one of the most intact Black H'mong settlements in the valley. Walking through here with a guide who grew up nearby makes all the difference — families call out greetings, children run alongside. We see traditional housing, communal fields, and the H'mong weaving traditions still practiced daily. Take your time — this is not a walk-through, it's a visit.
11:30 AM
Ta Van — Giay Village & Lunch
Ta Van is the Giay ethnic minority's main settlement in the valley — distinct culture, distinct architecture, distinct crafts from the H'mong villages upstream. Lunch here is at a family's house, not a restaurant. Dishes are cooked fresh each morning: stir-fried mountain vegetables, river fish, sticky rice. Eat slowly — the afternoon has time.
13:30 PM
Bamboo Forest & Muong Hoa Stream
After lunch the trail enters a long section of bamboo forest alongside the Muong Hoa stream. It's shaded, quiet and completely different in character from the open terraces. We cross the stream on a small bridge and follow the path toward Hau Thao — the section most guests say surprises them most.
14:30 PM
Hau Thao Viewpoint — Panoramic Valley Vista
From Hau Thao you get a panoramic view back down the Muong Hoa Valley — the entire terrace system visible in one frame. We rest here before the return transport picks up.
16:00 – 16:30 PM
Return to Sapa Town
Transport brings you back to your hotel or our office (105 Thach Son Street). You're back in Sapa town by late afternoon with time to rest before dinner.
Total walking time is approximately 5–6 hours across 10 km / 6 miles. The trail has some stone-paved terrace paths and one gentle descent after Lao Chai. Comfortable walking shoes with grip are recommended. Trekking poles available from our office.

How It Works
1
Book & confirm — Pay online or message us on WhatsApp. We confirm your booking within 2 hours — you'll receive all the details you need: date, time, pickup point, and what to bring.
2
We pick you up — Your guide arrives at your hotel at 9:30 AM. Groups are max 12 people — usually 4–8 on most days. And if you get lucky? Sometimes you'll be the only one booked that day, which means you get the guide entirely to yourself — a private experience at the group price.
3
Trek together — You share the route with other travelers. Same guide, same villages, same experience — just more people to share it with. Great for solo travelers.
4
Back by 3:00 PM — Plenty of time for a rest, shower, or dinner before your evening plans.
Best for: seniors, solo travelers, couples, or anyone who wants to see Sapa without a challenging hike.
1
Book your group — Tell us your group size. Larger groups pay less per person — 4 people at $38/person is our most popular private option for families and small groups.
2
Dedicated guide, your pace — No strangers. Your guide focuses entirely on your group. Stop longer at photos, skip sections you don't want, adjust the route.
3
Flexible timing — Want an earlier start? A different lunch spot? We can customize the day around your schedule and preferences.
4
Private transport throughout — Your own vehicle picks up and drops off. No sharing with other groups at any point.
Best for: families traveling with elderly parents, couples who want the guide entirely to themselves, or anyone with mobility concerns who needs a fully flexible pace.

This is an Easy-graded trek — no prior experience required. The trail is approximately 10 km / 6 miles with some stone-paved terrace paths and one gentle descent after Lao Chai. Nothing steep or technically challenging. If you can walk comfortably for 5–6 hours, you can do this trek. We recommend comfortable walking shoes with grip.

The rice terraces are beautiful year-round, but peak at two times: September–October (gold harvest, the most dramatic colours) and May–June (paddy flooded, mirrors the sky). December–February is misty and atmospheric — pack warm layers. Avoid heavy rain weeks in July–August when trails can be muddy.

Why Trek With Us
Born in These Mountains
Our guides — Tzu Hang and Lo Hu — grew up in Black H'mong villages along the Muong Hoa Valley. They don't just know the trails; they know the families, the fields, and the stories behind every turn.
Routes the Crowds Don't Take
Because our community roots run deep, we access trails through private farmland and minority villages that mainstream operators simply cannot enter. You won't be walking the same path as 50 other tour groups.
Licensed & Fully Transparent
We hold a Vietnam National Tourism Authority operator license (10-078/2023/CDLQGVN-GP LHQT). Price shown is the price you pay — no surprise fees, no hidden commissions, no tipping pressure.
Small Groups — Real Attention
Maximum 12 people per group tour. Every private tour is one-guide, one-group. You're never lost in a crowd, never rushed. We move at your pace and stop wherever you want a photo.
"The bamboo forest section completely surprised me — I was expecting open rice paddies the whole time, which would have been beautiful enough. But that shaded trail along the stream in the afternoon was something else. The guide knew the name of every family in every village. Lunch in Ta Van was the best meal of the whole Vietnam trip."

"We chose this over the other rice field treks because it covered more ground. The variety was great — you go from staircase terraces, to a Giay village for lunch, to a bamboo forest, to a hill viewpoint. All in one day. The pace was good, not too rushed. One thing: bring poles if it's been raining — the descent after Lao Chai can be slippery."

★★★★★
"We went in late September and the terraces were golden. I've seen the photos online but nothing prepares you for the actual scale of it — the way it steps down the whole valley. The guide was incredible, knew every family, explained the difference between the H'mong and Giay communities in a way that actually made sense. Hau Thao viewpoint at the end was a perfect finish."
